Following an introduction to the region as well as to the forest holding by the Director Andreas Holzinger the meeting started with a short summary of the most recent project developments by Gerhard Weiss.

The attached „NWFP flashlight" provided room for updates on NWFP issues amongst RSG members. Harald Vacik reported on the COST Action FP 1203 „European Non-wood Forest Products Network", a European plattform to foster scientific cooperation, and related activities inter alia regarding NWFP database developments (i.e. actors and resources). „New" traditional knowledge on stone pine nuts (pinus cembra) was passed down from the „Zirbenland" by Ms. Bärnthaler. A study in the context of „TEEB" (i.e. The Economics of Ecosytems and Biodiversity) attracted the attention of Mr. Pelzmann who highlighted its potential for the evaluation of NWFP. It has been applied to depict the relative importance of wood and other ecosystem services in an urban forest in Hagen (Germany). One of the key topics this time revolved around venison, an issue of high relevance in the Gesäuse region (e.g. marketing of Gesäuse game, Xeis game). According to the per capita consumption (i.e. 0,6 kg/person per anno) there is clear evidence that the general public is lacking awareness that game meat may be consumed throughout the year and not exclusively during fall when gastronomy hooks on with specific culinary offers. This triggered an intensive discussion related to marketing issues (e.g. target group specific opportunities, regional cooperation), a debate that could be continued during a guided tour along the supply chain of game meat where Mr. Holzinger and his team provided insights to regional specifics regarding the life cycle of roe deer from the forest to the end-consumer.

Reports of working groups

In the frame of a preperatory meeting in relation to the annual „Waldfest" (forest festival) in Graz (Styria) the „AG Bewusstseinsbildung" met again to discuss in particular:

1. Which actions can be realised at the „Waldfest" in the context of NWFP

2. 5 concrete measures

3. 5 celebrities who could act as NWFP multiplicators

Awareness against NWFP shall actively be fostered during this event. Apart from NFWPs that will be promoted at various stands, inter alia run by RSG members, the issue shall be highlighted by a moderator in a sequence of live interviews (e.g. by ORF Styria). It was agreed that BOKU will contribute with financial support regarding dissemination material.

The „AG Innovation und Tradition" initiated a collection of best practice examples amongst their members to document products, services and related literature. It is planned to make the results publicly available, for instance digitized via the official StarTree website. Additionally they will be fed in the Innovations Database, a project led by Gerhard Weiss including already more than 200 forestry projects and product examples, unfolding additional synergies between the working group and the international project. The data entry form will be circulated amongst the RSG members in order to collect additional examples.

The „AG Kooperation" met frequently to discuss further collaboration and put emphasis on increasing quantities of game meat as well as related pricing. Due to strict quality management the integration of new partners (e.g. communal hunting associations) is a handicap, thus it is the main objective to unite two key players in the region (i.e. Admont Abbey and Mayr Melnhof) to accomplish the sustainable expansion of the general supply. It is expected that this collaboration has the potential to generate some sort of snowball effect amongst other forest holdings, thus fostering joint projects in the long run. To promote the brand „Gesäuse Wild" amongst private individuals and gastronomy it is planned to produce outdoor displays for up to date infos on fresh venison.

Expert model

BOKU members (H. Vacik, P. Huber) introduced an expert model approach to assess the potential of NWFPs for forest holdings. Although the practical work had to be postponed, the coordinators of the working groups Mr. Schüssler, Mr. Pelzmann and Mr. Holzinger agreed to follow up on that in the frame of the next working group meeting as they were all positive about the relevance of such an application. BOKU agreed to provide an electronic „info package" to allow for data collection in the coming weeks.

Joint end-product

New aspects were discussed regarding potential end products that may arise out of the work within the RSG and corresponding working groups. The following options were elaborated:

• NWFP movie „Waldland Steiermark"

• Leaflet on legal framework for companies

• Bachelor thesis on „fairplay NWFPs" (e.g. do´s & don´s, access & use rights)

• Partner & multiplicator acquisition (e.g. Mateschitz, wood museum Murau)

• Concluding Symposium on NWFP

Next meeting

It is envisaged to meet again in October, most likely in the frame of chestnut harvesting (Castanea sativa). Further details will be agreed upon and circulated amongst all RSG members.

4. Treffen StarTree Praxispanel Steiermark - Report

Stakeholder impressions of the StarTree General Assembly

It was very beneficial to attain further insights to the multiple dimensions of NWFPs, recognising different angles across European experts. Issues addressed spanned from the utilisation of natural resources without any particular management to more management intensive plantations (e.g. berries, chestnuts).

The field trip highlighted the professionalism of Italian mushroom producers, who still call themselves farmers, and mushroom processors. In contrast, taking into account the enormous dimensions (i.e. quantities, management intensity), we would definitely classify this as industrial production in Austria.

As one of the highlights i recall the presentation of insects as food sources. Since this topic became an issue in my field of activity recently, it was particularly interesting to see and taste upcoming innovations in this respect.

Finally, the market place pinpointed the high-level competence and skills of Italian farmers and processors as regards the marketing as well as the presentation of their products.

I would like to thank the Austrian project members (BOKU) for providing me with the opportunity to attend the meeting as one of the stakeholders involved in StarTree.

2nd RSG meeting in Styria - report

During the following "NWFP flashlight" participants could report on their latest experiences in the context of NWFP (i.e. since our last meeting in Grottenhof / Neuberg a.d. Mürz). Johannes Schantl wrapped up his impressions of the GA in Padua where he participated in accordance with a call for StarTree RSG members to join in for a networking session. Lisa Lehner and Magdalena Lackner reported on highlights with regard to their interview activities both for the Supply Chain survey and the In-Depth Case Studies. Participants brought in latest trends in the Austrian NWFP sector. RSG members provided insights to several ongoing projects, i.a. "NWFP medicine", "Forest delights", "XEIS Edelwild" (i.e. exclusive venison) and "Xeis Alpenlachs" (i.e. organic char), "Guided ski touring", "Swiss Stone Pine oil", or "Wild herbs production" pinpointing at an increasing interest in NWFP on a national level.
Marelli Asamer-Handler concluded with an update on Action Research with a particular focus on the evolution of "NWFP Nature Park Specialities". Participants additionally addressed various conflicts regarding the utilisation and property rights of certain NWFP (i.e. mushrooms, (Swiss Stone Pine) cones and decorative material) and thus triggered a discussion on issues such as i) access to forests, ii) picking of NWFPs as well as iii) legal provisions. Hence they perfectly set the stage for the following cornerstone of the 3rd RSG meeting, a presentation of selected results out of the "State of the European NWFP" – a synthesis report of the StarTree project that integrates the outputs of the first round of data acquistion across the 14 StarTree regions.

State of the NWFP sector in Europe

Based on recent project findings the talk provided insights both to the European dimension as well as to the regional level (i.e. Styria) and elaborated on the following topics: i) NWFP diversity, ii) NWFP marketing, iii) NWFP management, iv) access & use rights and v) innovations. To proof the reliability and credibility of the outcomes, with a particular focus on the situation in Styria, RSG members were asked to comment on the results and to complement the analysis. The feedback was positive in general with no objections of the plausibility related to the "State of the Styrian NWFP". This serves as a proof of data correctness and depicts the level of validity for the Styrian case.

RSG members were (again) surprised by the broad definition of NWFPs, ranging from e.g. cultivated "wild" mushrooms to Christmas tree production on arable land. Their views expressed total agreement to absolute disagreement (aiminig at a more narrow scope that strictly addresses non-wood forest products, i.e. wild products originating from forest land). Besides that major concerns related to property, access and use rights and confirmed the discrepancy of the legal framework and the de facto situation in Austrian forests (e.g. forest owners in Austria have the right to restrict the collection of NWFP but cannot cope with the plenty of pickers hence they mostly tolerate NWFP picking in their forests). Forest owner representatives communicated that they would expect policy makers to facilitate and to secure compliance of legal provisions.

Working group activities

Another cornerstone of this meeting was to put emphasis on the three working groups (WG) that constituted during the 2nd RSG meeting, starting with a report by each coordinator:

• Hr. Schüssler (WG "Awareness")

• Hr. Schantl (WG "Tradition & Innovation")

• Hr. Holzinger (WG "Cooperation")

Each group then gathered at a round table to plan further collaboration according to three main questions: i) When would you consider your group as successful in 2017 (i.e. the last RSG meeting in the frame of StarTree)?, ii) What has happened in this respect? and iii) What must not happen?

Starting with a loose brainstorming according to the guidelines (see questions above) the group work targeted at a stringent outline of forthcoming activities (i.e. what are the aims and thus the activities that need to be accomplished), including a tentative schedule until the next RSG meeting.
The individual output for each group was presented in a plenary session by BOKU members who acted as facilitators and aimed both at displaying potential synergies amongst WGs as well as fostering the identification of a joint product out ouf the RSG work.

As a means of inspiration on how such a product could look like both "StarTree movies" were presented to the audience (i.e. Picking your moments: the science behind foraging in forests and Do you know: who owns mushrooms in a forest?). Although there was no common agreement on the final product, various opportunitites were discussed in detail. The production of a movie (or a series of short movies) that addresses selected NWFP topics in Styria could be feasible, as it could also be the case for a jointly organised NWFP symposium, a regional report on NWFPs in Styria or the production of NWFP dissemination material (e.g. brochures, guidelines).

Next RSG meeting & Stakeholder networking

April was forecasted for the next meeting which will be hosted by Mr. Andreas Holzinger in the "Gesäuse" region.

Additional emphasis was put on forthcoming international StarTree project meetings (General Assembly) and the opportunity for stakeholders to attend such events as a means of a networking plattform created by the StarTree project. The BOKU team will support interested stakeholders (e.g. reimburse travel costs).
